How to Make Curry House Style Aloo Chaat – A Delicious Vegetarian Potato Starter Dish

This aloo chaat is a great summertime meal!

Aloo Chaat is potato salad done Indian style


You are bound to find this Aloo chaat on the menu of any good curry restaurant.

Aloo chaat or aloo chat as it is sometimes written tastes great and it’s easy to make. Easy fast recipes are essential to the success of popular curry houses. Here I would like to show you how to make this much loved salad.

Although I often serve aloo chaat as a side dish, it works equally well as a main course or light lunch.

My wife Caroline prefers to leave the aloo (potato) part out and simply pour the tart dressing over lettuce. She never has liked potato salad but personally I like the potatoes!

This recipe can be served at room temperature or cold.

Serves 4

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking and Cooling Time: 1 1/2 hours


INGREDIENTS for aloo chaat


2 Large Potatoes

1 Teaspoon Dijon mustard
3 Tablespoons virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon chaat masala
Juice of two lemons
A pinch of salt – to taste
A pinch of garam masala
1 teaspoon chopped coriander

4 fresh cos lettuce leaves – shredded
8 small cherry tomatoes quartered


Bring a pot of water large enough to accommodate the two potatoes to a boil

Add the two potatoes and let them simmer in the water until cooked through.

When you can easily stick a fork through the potatoes, lift the out of the water and allow to cool.

Cut into 1/2 inch pieces.

For the dressing

Mix the rest of the ingredients in a bowl and blend well.

To serve

Pour 90% of the dressing over the chopped potatoes and mix. Pour the rest over the tomatoes and lettuce.

Serve immediately.
